Symbolism:When the heroic twins, Hunahpu and Xbalanque found their father's playball equipment, they could not help doing a lot of noise while playing. The lords of Xibalba, “the place of fear”, could not bear the row and summoned them to come to the inferno court. For their punishment, they had to pass various tests. The first consisted in staying one night in the residence of darkness. The twins were entrusted with a torch of resinous pine and a cigar, which they should keep intact, as long and incandescent as they were at the beginning of the night, until the next morning. The twins extinguished them to preserve their length, and placed feathers of blazing macaw at the end of the torch, and a firefly at the end of the cigar: it was the first victory of the cunning twins over the gods of hells.
